In a recent conversation with a dear friend and colleague, I berated myself for a lack of creativity. I have been very quiet on the blogging front in recent weeks. I went to my archive this afternoon to search for inspiration. Surely, I could find a half-written article to pick up re-purpose and send out into the world. As I opened the file, the rain started, the barometer dropped my house cooled down, and I felt a surge of positive energy and started writing.
July and August 2022 have been curiously contrary months at CCS. I find myself on the horns of a business dilemma in relation to a couple of exciting strategic business decisions, which although important, don’t appear to be urgently in need of resolution. Basking in the prospect of fun times ahead, rather than getting started, I find myself happy to be inert for a while. What on earth is this all about?
My clients hear me constantly stressing the importance of being task orientated and having goals to reach for, so where on earth is my mojo? I think that hot weather and a dose of Covid provides me with a temporary get out of jail card but I still need to convince myself that it’s ok not to want to charge off at top speed. There’s plenty of time to increase activity levels.
After almost 30 years in corporate harness, I love the freedom of being self-employed. Though I can’t always predict work flows or income streams, I am usually pretty good at keeping myself motivated. At the start of a week with relatively few meetings in the diary, I still find myself sitting at my desk asking the question ‘Where is the magic going to come from this time?’ And I am often surprised by the answer. Social Media, particularly LinkedIn offers multiple opportunities to engage with the outside world through venturing opinions, adding supported messages to other people’s posts affords the chance to track and participate in the debates I consider to be most relevant. Being proactive in this way feeds my comprehension, keeps my own eyes open, and my knowledge current.
So where is all this leading? It’s leading to unanticipated programs and projects which have come to me unexpectedly. Whilst sitting on my hands contemplating longer term strategy, three new private clients have found their way to me, one new corporate project and a whole host of opportunities to participate in the ongoing debate on inclusion and how to enhance it through actual change have drawn me in.
My purpose as a coach is pretty clear! The work I do with clients seeks to create a safe place for reflection and creativity. Success for me is encouraging my clients to address and overcome problems seldom tackled because they are considered to be in the ‘too hard place’. Whether I am working with a single individual, a small team or participating in mission critical debate, I love my day job, and relish the possibilities that will present themselves as Chamberlen Consultancy Services continues to evolve.
